3 Signs Its Time to Replace That Mouthpiece

If you’re the type of vaper who cares about maintaining every part of their setup, you probably know that taking care of that mouthpiece is extremely important. After all, mouthpieces get dirty quickly, which can interfere with your device and your sessions while being, well, gross.

After a while, a mouthpiece needs to be replaced.  That’s because unfortunately, these pieces of hardware aren’t meant to last forever. So, how do you know when it’s time to toss that mouthpiece and grab a new one?  We’re here to help you find out.

What is a Mouthpiece?

A mouthpiece, sometimes referred to as a drip tip, is simply the little piece of hardware that attaches to your tank or atomizer and goes into your mouth when it’s time to inhale some vapor.  It acts as a sort of chimney that helps the vapor turn into an even stream that’s easy to inhale.

Mouthpieces come in a wide range of sizes, shapes and materials.  They can be made from glass, resin, plastic, metal, marble and more. Additionally, they come in a range of sizes, but the two main types are 810 and 510.  810 mouthpieces are short and wide, and they’re typically favored by cloud-chasers.  Meanwhile, 510 mouthpieces are tall and narrow, and they seem to do a better job at concentrating the flavor of an e-liquid.

Do Mouthpieces Need to be Cleaned?

Drip tips absolutely need to be cleaned at least weekly. That’s because:

  • They accumulate a lot of juice gunk over time, and that can clog the mouthpiece up so much that your airflow is compromised.
  • That mouthpiece is going into your mouth several times throughout the day, which means accumulation bacteria over numerous vape sessions.

Why Do Mouthpieces Need to be Replaced?

Mouthpieces need to be replaced simply because that’s the way it is when it comes to hardware. Even the best mouthpieces out there aren’t built to last for decades.  When you’re using that mouthpiece daily, it slowly wears down over time due to factors like heat, pressure and even your saliva.

What to Look For

These factors will determine when it’s time to swap out an old drip tip for a new one:

Sign #1: It Doesn’t Smell Great

If your mouthpiece has developed a strange, unappealing smell even after you’ve cleaned it, it’s probably best to throw it out.  There’s a good chance there’s lots of bacteria hiding in there that can’t be destroyed just by washing it.  Needless to say, you don’t want to be inhaling those germs.

Sign #2: Your Hits Aren’t as Strong

If you’ve washed your mouthpiece but you still feel like your hits are weaker than usual, it’s time to replace that mouthpiece.  Weak hits can mean a crack in the mouthpiece or a clog that can’t just be removed during a cleaning session.

Sign #3: Still Dirty No Matter How Much You Clean It

There comes a point when standard weekly cleanings aren’t enough to make that mouthpiece look like new again.  Little by little, juice gunk builds up on the inside of the mouthpiece, and after a while, it essentially becomes baked on.

A Fresh Mouthpiece Ensures a Better Vape Session

Mouthpieces, sadly, need to be replaced every so often in order to keep your vaping setup operating properly.  Luckily, they’re relatively inexpensive.  Use this guide to figure out when it’s time to toss that old mouthpiece and grab a new one.
